In their 2017 article "A New Research Approach for Peace Innovation," Kristian Hoelscher and Jason Miklian propose a framework that integrates scholarly research, entrepreneurial initiatives, and policy development to foster peacebuilding efforts. They identify four key challenges: expanding the collaboration among scholars, entrepreneurs, and policymakers; ensuring ethical and culturally sensitive engagement; designing innovations that deliver tangible positive impacts in conflict zones; and adapting peace innovation strategies to both global and local contexts. The authors highlight five thematic areas where peace innovation can be particularly effective: forecasting political economies of conflict, business and virtual peacebuilding, climate and environmentalism, migration and identity, and urbanization. By addressing these challenges and focusing on these areas, the proposed approach aims to develop better tools to prevent violence and promote sustainable peace in crisis and conflict environments.
